Bitter melon

Momordica charantia

Fruit & vegetableHarvest

A warty tropical cucurbit that tastes like a dare — a cooked vegetable with a blood-sugar folklore that is not a prescription.

Bitter melon is a tropical Old World cucurbit. Traditional Indian, Chinese, and Filipino kitchens cook the young fruit as a bitter vegetable. Culinary cooked amounts are the path. Extracts and juices as a glucose protocol are a clinic conversation, not this plate. Pregnancy and bitter-melon medicine do not mix. Salt-and-squeeze the slices if you want less dare.

Flavor

Bitter, green, a little cucumber if you tame it. Ripe orange arils around the seeds are sweet and a different snack in some kitchens.
