Last spring frost mid-April. First fall frost mid-October. A ridge runs colder than a hollow. Treat dates as a week either way, not a promise.

  1. Sow

Spinach, radish, lettuce — the fall bed

September is the second spring. Sow thick, thin for salad.

    Spinach

  2. Set out

    Set the July brassica starts

Onion ring, alyssum skirt, nasturtium trap — same guild as April, cooler air.

Cabbage · Kale · Broccoli · Sweet alyssum · Nasturtium

  3. Harvest

Tomato, pepper, dry bean, potato, cut flowers

A first light frost can still be two to four weeks out. Do not wait for it on a ripe fruit.

    Tomato · Potato · Zinnia · Dahlia

  4. Plan

Order garlic and divide peony if the clump is crowded

Peony hates a move. If you must, this is the month — eyes shallow.

    Garlic · Garden peony
