Herb. No. 075

Tobacco
Nicotiana tabacum
Solanaceae
The nightshade that built an industry — a teaching plate for nicotine, addiction, and why 'natural' is not safer.
A legal agricultural crop under licensing in many places. Unlicensed commercial production is regulated. Nicotine products are age-restricted. Home ornamental growing is often legal; selling leaf is not the same as growing a few flowers. Check local law.
- Parts used
- None recommended for self-care. Licensed nicotine replacement is a drug, not a garden product.
- Traditional notes
- Historical ritual smoke · Obsolete external and vermifuge uses
- Habitat only
- Domesticated tropical nightshade; now a worldwide crop. Wild Nicotiana species occur in the Americas.
- If you grow the ornamental flower, gloves — green leaf can sicken through cracked skin.
- This is not a home-curing guide. Nicotine is a poison with an industry.
- Keep children from the sticky leaves and the seed.
Safety
Starting tobacco for any 'medicinal' reason
Lore
Nicotiana, from Jean Nicot, who sent it to the French court. Sacred in many Native American contexts, industrial in everyone else’s. This plate is the plant and the harm, together.
The Herbarium — a teaching catalog, not a clinic. Traditional use is history, not a prescription. USDA 6b dates are a week either way, not a promise. Do not eat, drink, or harvest a plant you cannot name.
